Shaped by Limestone

RESERVES AND ESTATE WINES

These wines are not called Reserves for nothing. The yields are low and come from the best sites. The musts are fermented spontaneously and rest on the lees for almost a year before being bottled with a little sulfur and gentle filtration. Grape varieties are in the foreground but already here the origin and the soil have its maximum influence. Accordingly, the quantities bottled are minimal and concentrated.

FULL.ORIGINAL

When change becomes tradition. These wines are born from many years of experimentation. Far from current trends in the wine world, I have always wanted to find what is special. Only by constantly breaking with patterns, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, new opportunities for improvement can be found. The „creation story“ of my wine style can be found under the banner of these wines. Initial experiments with wood barrel aging, mash fermentation, unfiltered bottling and many other small building blocks have been practiced, adapted and optimized since 2012. The ongoing learning process leads to sustainable, impressive wines that are second to none.

SINGLE VINEYARDS

The southern slope of Mölsheim has the best limestone terroir for Riesling in the world. No more and no less. Here, the most difficult, limestone vineyard sites are reserved for Riesling. We are very fortunate to have some filet pieces within the Mölsheim sites that are invaluable.
The vineyards produce the lowest yields on their own. As the roots are constantly in battle against the limestone, which is difficult to penetrate, from the moment the vine is planted. Slow grape ripening, due to the cool climate of the Zellertal, favors long-lived wines.
The precious, small yields are fermented spontaneously in oak barrels. The wine is given time to ferment and time on the full lees. Space to develop, which is only given in the breathing wooden barrel in contact with the yeast. The wines are also given time after bottling.
In our limestone-isolated wine storage, the wines mature for years. These liquid witnesses of time are our true treasures, dug from the winegrower’s gold – the Mölsheim limestone.

Zellerweg Am Schwarzen Herrgott

Great vineyard sites are visible to the naked eye. Here it becomes directly clear. The Riesling parcel in the Herrgott site, called „Zellerweg“, the limestone gravel prevails. It is tightly enclosed by the clay, which seals the soil into a large rock.
Standing in the bare southern slope, with immense incline, vines take root here, which by themselves produce absolutely the lowest yields. The mixture of limestone and clay in this vineyard is absolutely perfect and, in combination with the slope, a rare peculiarity. This unique parcel produces brilliantly dark and long-lived Rieslings. Only a few liters of this monument result each year from the crown jewel of the winery.

Silberberg

The plot, named „Gefälle“, which can be translated to „steep gradiant“ is located in the Silberberg on a steep part of the southern slope of Mölsheim. The vineyard is surrounded by bushes and meadows, which were once also planted with vines. Resistant and as a lone fighter, it stands here on the slope that is difficult to cultivate. It was planted as a terraced vineyard with east-west rows that are in the sun all day. The rows of vines are each terraced up to 70 cm high, which is why the vines hardly shade each other and achieve great grape ripeness. The grayish, silvery clay and limestone marl produces wines with greater juiciness and wildness than the limestone gravel of the Zellerweg. The potential found in this piece of earth is gigantic.
